Watchmaker's tools on a bench

WHY BRASSWIND

What makes the difference when choosing a watchmaker.

Watch repair isn't a commodity service. The care given, the documentation kept, and the honesty shown at assessment stage all vary considerably. Here's where Brasswind stands.

AT A GLANCE

Six things worth knowing before you choose a workshop.

These are the things our customers tell us made the difference. Not marketing claims — just observations from people who've been through the process.

Assessment before commitment

You won't be asked to leave your watch and accept a bill sight-unseen. We look first, quote second, and work only when you're comfortable with what's proposed.

Single-technician continuity

The same watchmaker handles your piece from intake to return. Not a rotating team — one person who knows what they found, what they did, and why.

A record you can keep

Every completed service includes a written account of findings and work carried out. Useful for your own records and for any future service by anyone, anywhere.

Regular updates on longer jobs

For heritage restorations and more involved mechanical services, we check in at each stage. You're not left wondering what's happening to something important.

Transparent pricing structure

Two of our three services have fixed prices. The Heritage Restoration is scoped individually and priced before work begins — no scope creep, no late additions.

A conservative approach to refinishing

We don't polish everything that comes through. For vintage pieces especially, we discuss what case and dial work is appropriate before touching anything cosmetic.

EXPERTISE

Watchmaking experience that shows in the results.

Our head watchmaker has over eighteen years of experience with mechanical movements, with a particular background in mid-century automatics and the calibres that appear in heritage pieces sourced through the Klang Valley estate and collector circuit.

Experience in watchmaking isn't just years — it's the range of movements handled, the problems diagnosed, and the judgment developed for when to act and when to leave well alone. That judgment takes time to build and it matters for the watches we're trusted with.

  • 18+ years servicing mechanical and quartz timepieces
  • Broad calibre knowledge across Swiss, Japanese, and Asian manufacturers
  • Experience with period-correct restoration of vintage movements
  • Understanding of how Malaysian humidity affects seal degradation and lubrication
  • Electronic timing machine for before-and-after rate measurement
  • Ultrasonic cleaning equipment for watch components
  • Pressure and water-resistance testing for applicable pieces
  • Workshop-grade magnification and lighting for movement work

EQUIPMENT

The right tools, used correctly.

Proper watchmaking equipment allows for accurate diagnosis and repeatable results. We invest in the tools needed to do the job properly rather than working around gaps in the workshop.

A timing machine, for example, isn't just useful — it's the only way to know accurately whether a mechanical movement is running within acceptable variance. We use one on every mechanical service and include the readings in your documentation.

COMMUNICATION

Clear communication from start to finish.

We know that handing a watch to someone — especially a sentimental or valuable one — requires trust. We try to earn that through clarity rather than reassurance. You'll know who is working on it, what they're doing, and when to expect it back.

If something unexpected comes up during the service — a component that needs replacing, a complication we hadn't anticipated — we pause and contact you before proceeding. No work without sign-off.

  • Pre-service assessment and discussion before any commitment
  • Updates at key stages of longer restorations
  • Contact before proceeding with any unplanned work or cost
  • Full documentation on collection — no surprises at the end
  • Fixed pricing on Care & Comfort (RM 480) and Mechanical Service (RM 1,980)
  • Heritage Restoration scoped and priced before work begins
  • No ancillary charges added without prior discussion
  • Service documentation adds long-term value to the piece's history

PRICING

Prices that reflect the work, without additions after the fact.

Two of our services carry published, fixed prices. The Heritage Restoration is different in nature — each piece requires individual assessment — so it is scoped and quoted before any work begins. In all cases, you'll know the cost before committing.

A well-documented service also adds to the provenance of a watch — particularly for mechanical or heritage pieces. That documentation has real worth if the piece is ever valued, sold, or handed on.

COMPARISON

What separates a craft workshop from a standard repair shop.

Without naming other providers, here's how the experience typically differs.

Feature Typical Repair Shop Brasswind
Pre-service assessment Sometimes Always, before quoting
Written service documentation Rarely Every service
Single technician per watch Varies Always
Client notified before unplanned costs Not always Standard practice
Intake photography Uncommon Every job
Timing machine readings included Rarely On mechanical services

WHAT SETS US APART

A few things you won't find everywhere.

A conversation before any obligation

Bring your watch in for a look with no expectation of leaving it. We'll tell you what we see, what we'd recommend, and what it would cost. You decide whether to proceed.

Period-correct sourcing for vintage pieces

For heritage restorations, we source parts that are appropriate to the era and calibre — not just functionally equivalent substitutes. This takes longer but preserves the integrity of the watch.

A service record that travels with the watch

Our documentation is formatted to accompany the watch through its life. If it's ever serviced again, insured, valued, or passed on, the record from Brasswind will be a useful and credible part of its history.

Restraint when restraint is the right approach

Not everything old needs to be made to look new. We discuss what's appropriate for each piece — particularly dials, cases, and finishes — before any cosmetic work is done.
